Monash Health is an impressive organisation of seven public hospitals, 21 community health sites, five aged care facilities, university affiliated international research and tertiary education. We provide healthcare for the entire lifespan from pre-birth to palliative care and all stages in between, and we have recently opened the new 230-bed Monash Children’s Hospital.

Monash Children’s Hospital is one of Australia’s leading providers of integrated children’s health services, with more than 30 specialist services and programs. It is Australia’s third largest children’s hospital with 304 beds across three campuses: 208 paediatric and 96 neonatal, including multiday, same day, oncology, mental health, sleep, PICU, NICU, special care neonatal beds and 4 operating theatres. Last year the hospital treated 39,000 children in its paediatric and neonatal wards, and 66,000 children in its emergency departments.

The Monash Paediatric ICU is a new, 10-bed, state-of-the-art unit that opened in 2018. It is one of only seven tertiary PICUs in Australia and one of two tertiary paediatric intensive care referral units for the State of Victoria. The unit is accredited by the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand and admits over 600 children a year with a broad range of general and subspecialty paediatric as well as surgical conditions.

About the Role

The Outreach Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) functions as a clinical leader within Monash Children's Hospital by supporting clinicians on the ward in providing safe and high quality care to their most vulnerable patient cohort. The Outreach CNC is responsible for assessing complex and deteriorating patients on the ward, emergency or recovery environment and providing clinical advice or appropriate escalation and referral to relevant medical teams as required. This advanced practice nurse is a key member in the Medical Emergency Team (MET) and attends Paediatric Code Blues within the service. The Outreach CNC supports discharge of patients from the PICU ensuring adequate follow up and continuity of care from the critical care area to the ward. Reporting to the PICU Nurse Manager, the Outreach CNC is also a considered a nurse leader within the PICU, contributing to projects, research and education and holding a quality improvement portfolio. 

  • Assessment and review of the complex and deteriorating patient
  • Attend paediatric medical emergencies and code blue
  • Support patients and families transferred from PICU
  • Lead nursing excellence in PICU

About You

You are an experienced paediatric critical care nurse with extensive exposure to a variety of paediatric clinical presentations. Consistently flexible, you are able to continually re-prioritise your time in direct response to clinical and operational requirements. You are warm, friendly and approachable, welcoming referrals from concerned nursing and medical teams, supporting and empowering clinicians to provide high quality care. You have demonstrated ability to work autonomously, without direct leadership to deliver measurable outcomes in improvement, research or education portfolios.

What you need:

  • Current APRHA registration
  • Current Working with Children’s Check
  • Postgraduate qualifications Paediatric Critical Care
  • Masters in nursing (desirable)
  • Previous experience in a similar role
